I moved to Gadsden, Alabama in June, 2023. I left behind a vibrant writing community and missed it so much, that I started my own here in Alabama.
Our club began with two people, Sonja and Keith, in the Gadsden Library, talking about writing and their goals. While, the group is small, with at most only two or three attending, it is still going and my goal is to nourish it until it blooms widely.
When we started, we didn't have a clue where to begin, so we picked a prompt and made a goal to write a short story for the following month.
"If you don't know what or how much to write, just start writing anything." At least that's what all the writing blogs say, but it's not that easy sometimes. Sometimes you need a kick and a goal.
Flash fiction does just that. The kick is a prompt and the goal is the short amount of time allocated to finishing the story. There are a whole bunch of websites that deal with Flash Fiction, but this is what you need to know about it.
Basically, the story has to have three things.
A plot. To be clear, a flash fiction piece is a complete story. ...
Characters. You don't have a lot of space to describe your characters, obviously, but readers should still be able to tell them apart. ...
An ending that is clearly and ending. (no cliff hangers)
You can read some of Keith's stories that he wrote based on prompts, on his website, https://jkeithowens.com/
I've not posted my stories since most of them are going into a collection I hope to publish. But you can read my shortest flash fiction piece at 101 Words: https://101words.org/?s=sonja+mcgiboney
Here are some websites about Flash fiction that also offer opportunities to write.
