September for Authors

September is the start of many things in this world. School, fall, cooler weather, seasonal change, shorter days, and for a lot of people, it's getting back into a successful routine.

But does September have any significance for writers?

All of us that attended public school, and many homeschoolers, are programed to think of September as the New Year. With that comes the "Back-to-School" feeling. We throw away or organize last years clutter that sat in the closet all summer. We buy new journals, new pens, new subscriptions, new memberships. We create new goals.

There is a psychological rhythm, with the cooler weather and changing leaves, that makes us feel like changing our habits or trying something new. Maybe we change our routine, like changing the time set aside for writing, writing in a new place, or finding other people to share a writing space. We seek out ways to be more productive.

The feeling of renewal is strong. We dump the old grade, the old ideas, the old manuscripts, and begin fresh. We discover fresh ideas for changing what wasn't working. With new writing communities, we learn new things. Maybe we attend a class, or webinar to learn a new writing skill.

When I Googled, "September reset for writers" this is what Google came up with.

Declutter Your Writing Life

  • Audit your projects: Look at what is working, what feels draining, and what is finished.

  • Identify distractions: Name your biggest time-wasters (like social media or unorganized notes) and set boundaries.

  • Start where you are: Do not try to make up for lost time or unfinished summer goals; just begin from today.

Build a Cozy Routine

  • Choose a weekly goal: Set a tiny, realistic target instead of pressuring yourself to write every single day.

  • Block calendar time: Treat your writing appointments like non-negotiable meetings.

  • Create a sensory shift: Light a candle, make a warm fall drink, and establish a comforting physical ritual to signal your brain that it is time to write.

Use Seasonal Prompts

  • Transition reflections: Write about what summer you are leaving behind and what energy you want to invite into autumn.

  • Sensory descriptions: Describe a September morning, the sound of a cool night, or your favorite fall scent.

Take time to "reset."
