Searching for the Past

My late Aunt Carol spent years digging into family history. While I think history is fascinating, I never caught the bug that made me want to dig into it. Her stories were always amusing and, if her research is correct, my McGiboney children are related to distant Royal cousins, not to mention their Mayflower and revolutionary ties.

Though I don’t dig, I do like to preserve. It’s important and a bit fascinating. I have scanned over 5000 pages of information, letters, and notes and they include family experiences during hurricanes, westward expansion, Conestoga wagon rides, service in many US wars, farming, music, art and more.

The picture below is of Elva Marie McGiboney, Marie to all her friends. She was a graduate of Alabama Girls’ Technical Institute and wrote about a letter a week to her mother, Lucy. She saved every letter that she ever received and so did Lucy providing a treasure trove of history. She also was a photographer and tinted pictures for a studio in Florida.

Somewhere in all this information, a story is brewing but so far I’ve not put pen to paper yet.
