Over Three Hundred Picture Books

I did it. I read over three hundred picture books. Why did I do it? Because someone said you learn by reading the genre you write. Here is what I learned.

  1. Books of all types get traditionally published. A few of the books I read didn't make the list that I posted on this website. I didn't like them and I questioned how they got published at all. So many times I think my story isn't good enough, or it isn't up to traditional standards, but reading these "Duds", in my opinion, I realized that it's all up to the publishing company. If someone there likes it, then it will go. If nobody there likes it then it wont go. If you want your story to be traditionally published, you have to find the yes people. They're out there somewhere. (Not saying your book is awful, just that other's opinions differ and you have to keep looking to find someone that is on the same page as your story.)

  2. Books have evolved from characters learning from their parents and/or peers (they call it "preachy" now-a-days or too didactic) to children finding their own solutions. Participating in the 12 x 12 challenge, has confirmed that publishers want all the learning coming directly from the character. But, in my opinion, sometimes we need to model asking for help. I don't see a problem with kids seeking help from authority figures. Maybe there is a mid-point somewhere?

  3. Opinions vary. Jane Yolen has written over 400 books for children. She is acclaimed as the "Hans Christian Anderson of Children's Literature." https://www.janeyolen.com/ I read nine of her books but only seven made my list. Why? Because not all her books were to my taste. Remember that when pitching your own stories. Not everyone will like them.

Reading all these books has helped me define what I like to see in a book which will, inevitably, affect my writing.
